While Melbourne is more temperate than the northern states and can experience some relatively cold winters, the temperature can also soar to high levels during the summer. Air conditioners in Melbourne homes are now a much more common sight than in decades past.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your split system or ducted cooling.
Simple steps to take
- Do a little preventative maintenance to keep your unit running efficiently. This includes regular cleaning of filters to maintain air flow and quality, replacement of filters where required, and cleaning of the system’s coils to remove dirt and dust so that they can do their job of absorbing heat. If you have ductwork, you should ensure it is kept clean and free of dust.
It’s also important to clear away any debris from external components and to trim away any branches that are too close. However, some shelter close to (but not right on top of!) your outside unit can help to protect it from direct sunlight, and to keep it cooler and running more efficiently. - If your system is not reverse cycle and you won’t be using it in the winter, cover the external unit during the cooler weather to protect it from dust and debris. Just make sure to remove the cover when you want to switch your unit on again!
- Make it easy for your air conditioner to cool your home. This includes using other cooling methods such as ceiling fans, shades and awnings, and cross-ventilation at night. Also seal up draughty gaps to prevent loss of cooled air when your system is running.
- Set your thermostat between 23°C and 27°C in the summer as this prevents your system overworking, and also reduces energy use. Close off doors to rooms that are not in use, or use zoning if you have a ducted system.
- Call in the professionals to give your system an annual check-up. This may involve checking refrigerant levels, performing any required repairs, and doing a general tune-up.
When to call a technician
If your system is not working properly you might also need to call in a repair technician. Examples include:
- A loud banging noise in your unit which may indicate a loose fan belt or other part.
- Your system doesn’t smell right! This may indicate mould inside the unit or another problem.
- A leakage problem, which may signify ice build-up or blocked drainage.
- The system is not cooling properly. This may indicate your refrigerant needs topping up or another problem.
